A Child Advocacy Law Firm in Lake Oswego, Oregon
The law firm of Fiscus & Stoneman, LLP, has a strong focus on legal matters involving child advocacy. Our attorneys have advanced experience handling a wide range of legal disputes in which the rights of children — or their parents — are at stake. We take a firm stance with regard to the legal rights of children and their parents, and we believe that a collaborative approach to legal disputes involving child advocacy often leads to a better outcome than an adversarial court proceeding.
Whenever possible in child advocacy situations, we use our advanced training in mediation and other alternative dispute resolution procedures to help our clients reach satisfactory resolutions of their concerns.
At Fiscus & Stoneman, LLP, our child advocacy law practice is built on a foundation of respect for the rights of children in the legal system. As part of the firm's commitment to protecting the rights of children, attorney Kathleen Stoneman frequently serves as a guardian ad litem, appointed by the local courts to serve as the legal representative of children involved in legal matters such as custody or visitation disputes, guardianships or conservatorships.
Juvenile Delinquency: Representing Children Accused of Criminal Acts
A major part of our child advocacy work involves representing children who are charged as juvenile delinquents. Here, our role is to safeguard the child's legal rights as he or she moves through the juvenile delinquency system. We work closely with the child and parents at every step of the process, providing clear descriptions of the process and the child's options each step of the way.
If your child has been detained by the police and charged with juvenile delinquency — no matter the charge — we encourage you to contact our office as soon as possible.
Termination of Parental Rights and Juvenile Dependency Hearings
A second aspect of our child advocacy practice is representing parents whose children have been removed from the home due to allegations of abuse or neglect. We do this work out of a belief that, in most cases, a family should remain intact. Within the juvenile dependency system, there are usually solutions available that stop short of complete termination of parental rights. We use our considerable negotiation skills to advocate with the social services agency on the parent's behalf, developing and monitoring an acceptable parenting education plan that will allow our client to retain a relationship with their child while learning parenting skills to improve the relationship in the future.
